Malaysia said the agreement was a sovereign right of the UAE, but would continue to support Israel`s withdrawal from the Palestinian territories. The Philippine Department of State issued a statement in which it welcomed the agreement and hoped it would contribute to peace and security in the Middle East. The US, EU, Russia, and the United Nations cooperated as a Quartet to develop a roadmap for peace. While Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas accepted the text, his Israeli counterpart Ariel Sharon had more reservations about the wording. The timetable provided for a final agreement on a two-State solution to be found in 2005. Unfortunately, it was never implemented. In an editorial published Friday, Iran`s national news agency IRNA rejected the deal neither strategically nor historically – simply a move by Trump to bolster his re-election hopes. Rallies and demonstrations have been held in many cities in Pakistan to condemn the agreement between the UAE and Israel. The deal comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif last week held rare talks with his Emirati counterpart to raise hopes for an improvement in their relations.
Joe Biden, Mr. Trump`s opponent in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, praised the deal because it “builds on the efforts of several governments to foster a broader Arab-Israeli opening, including the efforts of the Obama-Biden administration to build on the Arab peace initiative.” Nasrallah told Lebanese television that the deal was a service to US President Donald Trump, who needs “a realization” before the November elections. The deal is also a favor for a “weak” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to the militant leader. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said the deal should be pursued by Israel by abandoning any plan to annex parts of the West Bank and that if the agreement could lead to its withdrawal from the Palestinian territories, it would bring the Middle East closer to peace. Otherwise, it would only exacerbate the Arab-Israeli conflict. Given that many of Iran`s Arab neighbors already have ties to Israel, she said the deal would have no major impact, “aside from shame for regional states and domestic use for Trump.” The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement stressing that as a member of the UN Security Council and the Quartet, it supports the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He noted that the agreement suspended the annexation of parts of the West Bank, which he described as an important element of the agreement, and said that annexation plans were a major obstacle to the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian dialogue. In a telephone conversation with Netanyahu on August 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he hoped the deal would strengthen stability and security in the Middle East. In a joint statement by Trump, Netanyahu, and Zayed, it said, “This historic diplomatic breakthrough will advance peace in the Middle East region and is a testament to the courageous diplomacy and vision of the three leaders and the courage of the UAE and Israel to take a new path that will unlock the great potential of the region.” The UAE said it would continue to support the Palestinian people and that the agreement would maintain the prospect of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. . .
